The Ecstasy, The Agony, 2017
Installation, photograph, video
Yali uses the iconic Cuban newspaper Granma, the official voice of Communist Party of Cuba (PCC). In the photograph she is holding the newspaper as she was reading it. In the video the artist wears a dress made from Granma newspaper while her hand mimics the salute promoted by the Cuban officialdom to patriotic symbols such as the national anthem, the flag. The same gesture is made by "pioneros" (children in elementary school) while they make their commitment to the Revolution. Both scenarios were created it in different locations. The photograph is set in the artist's studio in US and the dress was made after her collecting newspaper for a while in Havana, Cuba. Yali examines the relationship between personal and social identity, utopia and disillusion, power structures and political manipulation.
